Summary: Baekhyun is used to getting scolded by the teacher, but he isn't sure what he did to make Sehun cry. Kid!fic.

Baekhyun threw his head back and laughed, smacking Chanyeol on the shoulder and pushing him toward his assigned seat. They'd been imitating the hokey videos they had to watch in English class, exaggerating their movements in the way that adults seemed to think appealed to children. News flash: it didn't.
It was break time now before they had to start social studies. Baekhyun knew that he and Chanyeol had been on a roll that day, making all of the other kids laugh and not even getting scolded by the teacher, which was often the price to pay for being the class clowns.
“Byun Baekhyun,” the teacher called out sternly, a frown on her face.
Maybe he'd celebrated too soon.
“Yes, Seosaengnim?” he asked, smiling the smile that had adults cooing over him.
That was when he noticed a sniffling Sehun standing a little bit behind the teacher.
Baekhyun wracked his brain for what he could have done to make Sehun cry, but he came up with nothing.
“Apologize to Sehun,” she ordered, pushing Sehun out from behind her so that he was face to face with Baekhyun. Baekhyun took in Sehun's watery, red-rimmed eyes and his pink nose that he kept rubbing with his hands.
“Apologize for what?” Baekhyun asked. He knew that the teacher thought he was being a smart ass by the way she crossed her arms in front of her, but he really didn't know what he'd done.
“I have to start class,” she said instead of giving him a hint as to what he'd done, “You two go out in the hall and work this out.”
With that, she was pushing them out of the classroom and closing the door behind them. Sehun immediately leaned against the wall and slid down so that he could bury his face in his knees. Baekhyun stood there helplessly for a minute before he sat down next to him and sighed.
“Yah, Sehun-ah. Why are you crying?” he asked, not knowing what he was supposed to do and even more unsure about what to do with the knot forming in his stomach at the sight of Sehun crying.
But Sehun didn't answer, instead pressing his face harder against his knobby knees, shoulders shaking.
Baekhyun looked at the closed classroom door in desperation like someone might come out to save him. No such luck.
“Sehun,” he tried again, tapping his finger against Sehun's shoulder incessantly until Sehun reached out blindly to smack his hand away. Baekhyun was pleased to have at least gotten a reaction so he kept it up, grabbing Sehun's wrist when he tried again to swat Baekhyun's arm away.
With Baekhyun holding his arm hostage, Sehun finally lifted his head to attempt to glare at him. His tear streaked cheeks and runny nose had the smile falling off Baekhyun's face.
“Stop it,” Sehun petulantly demanded, sniffling and trying to yank his arm back.
“Why are you crying?” Baekhyun asked again, refusing to relinquish his hold on Sehun's wrist.
Sehun just glared at him.
“Sehun,” Baekhyun whined, shaking Sehun's arm, “Why are you sad?”
Sehun mumbled something that Baekhyun couldn't hear while successfully pulling his arm from Baekhyun's grip.
“What?” Baekhyun demanded, voice too loud in the empty hallway.
“You were Chanyeol's partner in English for the role play instead of mine,” he repeated, looking away and wrapping his arms around his knees, “I didn't have a partner and you didn't even notice.”
Baekhyun tried to recall what Sehun had been doing when he and Chanyeol had begun their epic impersonations of the actors from the video, but he couldn't.
“But Chanyeol and I are always partners,” Baekhyun said, feeling that it was a valid argument.
Sehun looked over at him and he seemed like he torn between bursting into tears again and punching Baekhyun in the face.
“You're always partners with Jongin,” Baekhyun pointed out. Because if Sehun was always partners with Jongin, then why couldn't Baekhyun be partners with Chanyeol?
“But we changed seats,” Sehun told him in a small voice, annoyance written all over his face even as he had to wipe at a few stray tears, “You sit next to me. We're supposed to be partners.”
“Oh.” That hadn't actually occurred to Baekhyun. He didn't really give things like that much thought at all.
“You'd rather be partners with Chanyeol than me,” Sehun accused.
“Nu-uh,” Baekhyun argued even as Sehun sniffled and shook his head.
“You would. You'd rather imitate the videos with him.”
“Well...” Baekhyun paused because that was true, but it didn't mean that he didn't like Sehun, “I'd rather learn SHINee's new dance with you.”
Sehun seemed somewhat pleased by that but still unconvinced.
“Or if I wanted someone to help me put old milk in Jongin's lunchbox, I'd rather do that with you.”
Sehun's lips curved up.
“Don't cry anymore, Sehunnie,” Baekhyun told him, standing up and grabbing Sehun's hand to pull him up as well.
“Now,” Baekhyun said, reaching out to wipe the remaining tears from Sehun's cheeks with his fingers, “Let's go back to class before the teacher comes out here and gives us both a lecture about friendship or something.”
Sehun grinned, sniffling one last time before allowing Baekhyun to lead him back into the classroom by the hand.
The teacher seemed happy that they'd worked things out on their own- patting them both on the back and sending them back to their seats to start on the worksheet that their classmates were already working on.
“So, do you want to?” Baekhyun whispered when the teacher was out of earshot.
“Want to what?” Sehun wanted to know.
“Put old milk in Jongin's lunchbox,” Baekhyun clarified with a mischievous smile.
Sehun muffled a laugh behind his hand, looking over at at an unassuming Jongin who was staring into space and peeling his lips.
Sehun nodded, eyes disappearing from how he was laughing and Baekhyun grinned, knocking his foot against Sehun's under the table.
He wasn't totally sure why his stomach felt like it was full of wriggling worms, but he knew that a smiling Sehun was 1,000 times better than a crying one.
