a/n: I have no idea where this came from- I just thought it up while I was dozing in bed this morning. I'm sorry it's so sad! :'(
----------------------
“Appa~” five-year-old Hyunsu says, getting her father’s attention. It’s a sunny Sunday afternoon in May and the father and daughter pair is lounging in the living room of their small house- Minho reading the newspaper while Hyunsu lies on the floor, coloring in pictures of fairy princesses in her coloring book.
“Yes sweetheart?” Minho looks up from his newspaper to see his daughter crouched on the floor, a questioning look in her eyes.
“Will you tell me about what Jinki-appa was like?” she asks innocently, though even at her young age, she knows that it’s a delicate subject.
Minho feels a stab of pain in his heart at the mention of his deceased partner, but he feels a sad smile tugging at his lips as he thinks about him. He makes passing comments about him to Hyunsu sometimes, just so she knows that- for the first two years of her life- she had another amazing appa to care for her. But he has never really talked about him at length before.
“Of course,” he says after a moment, seeing a smile spread across her face, “Come up here,” he pats the space on the couch next to him.
Hyunsu quickly climbs onto the couch, settling against Minho’s side and looking up at him with her big, brown eyes- eyes that remind him of Jinki’s even if he knows that a resemblance is impossible.
“Jinki-appa was the best appa in the world,” Minho begins, recollecting the way that the other man would do anything to make his daughter happy, hating so much to see her cry.
“Even better than you?” Hyunsu asks with disbelief. Minho chuckles.
“Even better than me,” he affirms, “Even if he didn’t believe it himself.”
“Wow,” Hyunsu marvels, her face a look of awe as though he’s telling her that her other father had been a super hero. Or a prince. But he was both of those to Minho.
“He had the biggest, warmest smile that you’d ever seen,” he told her, “And when he smiled, his eyes turned into little crescents, just like yours do.”
Hyunsu grinned.
“He used to sing you to sleep at night,” Minho remembered, “He had a beautiful voice. Whenever you heard it, you stopped crying. It was like magic.”
“Appa has a good voice,” Hyunsu tells Minho. She sometimes makes him sing her lullabies even if she claims that she’s too old for them. Minho smiles and squeezes her tiny frame.
“Thank you sweetie,” he says, wishing with all his might that he had a recording of Jinki singing to her. He should have thought to make one.
“What else?” Hyunsu prods, eager for more.
“He was kind of clumsy,” Minho chuckles, thinking about the seemingly unreal amount of times that Jinki would trip during the course of a day, “But when he fell, he’d always get right back up. And sometimes he’d pretend to trip to make you laugh.”
“Did it hurt when he fell?” Hyunsu asks.
“Sometimes, but he was good at catching himself too,” Minho tells her.
Hyunsu nods like she understands.
“He loved piano music,” he continues, “You know the music I play while I cook dinner?” Hyunsu nods, “Those are all his CDs.”
“I like them,” Hyunsu smiles.
“Me too.”
The two of them sit in silence for a moment, feeling the sun from the window warm them. After a while, Hyunsu wiggles, climbing into Minho’s lap and facing him.
“Ouch, you have boney knees, Hyunsu,” Minho teasingly scolds, shaken out of his reverie to help her reposition herself on his lap.”
“Don’t be sad now, appa,” Hyunsu says earnestly, putting her hands on his cheeks.
“I’m not sad,” he assures her, biting playfully at her nose.
“You seem sad when you talk about Jinki-appa,” she muses, “Do you miss him?”
“I do,” Minho admits, “But I’m not sad because I have you.”
Hyunsu smiles and kisses him on the cheeks loudly. Minho laughs and proceeds to kiss her all over her face even as she squirms and shrieks that his spit is gross.
And it’s true- he does miss Jinki. So much. But with Hyunsu, the daughter that they’d both always wanted, he can’t be sad. Because if it was the other way around, Minho would want Jinki to be happy. Even if he wasn’t there to share that happiness.

Date: 2011-05-08 11:26 pm (UTC)Just...my heartstrings, played like a violin. You are so consistently good at manipulating my emotions (and I mean that in the really great sense, because that is what good art is supposed to do).
Sweet-fluffy without being hammy or sappy is hard to do, but you knocked it out of the park.
Back to boo-hooing.
