“Gwiboon! I didn’t bring you to my family’s lake house so you could sit on a chair all day!” Junghee exclaimed, marching up to the other girl who was sitting comfortably on a lawn chair in the shade, flipping through a copy of Vogue.
“It’s vacation,” she retorted, looking up at a dripping wet Junghee through her huge sunglasses.
“But you could do this at home!” Junghee complained, her arm making a sweeping gesture to highlight the scene. However, this caused several water droplets to escape her tanned skin and land on Gwiboon.
“Yah!” the pale girl screeched, glaring at Junghee before wiping futilely at the water drops seeping through the magazine pages and making them wavy.
“We’re going swimming,” Junghee announced, grabbing Gwiboon by the wrist and dragging her out of the chair. The slightly younger girl struggled and fought, cursing all the while, but Junghee’s grip was strong so she could do nothing but drop the magazine on the grass and step out of her sandals before she was careening through the air only to land with a splash in the cold, murky water.
She emerged a few seconds later, coughing and pushing her dripping bangs out of her eyes. Junghee stood on the dock and grinned, watching her best friend flail around like a fish out of water…or the opposite in this case.
“Kim Junghee!” Gwiboon yelled once she had cleared the water from her lungs and pushed her hair back off her face, “I’m going to kill you!”
Junghee just laughed, jumping off the dock and effectively splashing the other girl with water.
When she came up, Gwiboon was glowering at her. She would have been terrified if she didn’t know that her puppy-dog eyes would save her from certain death. And though they didn’t seem to be doing anything to lessen the other girl’s anger at that moment, she knew that she was probably the only one who could throw Gwiboon into a lake and live to tell the tale.
But for now, she had to swim away like her life depended on it as Gwiboon chased her and repeatedly dunked her under the surface.
---
Gwiboon flopped onto the couch next to Junghee, toweling her hair dry. It was after dinner that night and they had both showered, washing the lake out of their hair and feeling fresh again.
“What do you want to do now?” Gwiboon asked, tossing the towel over the back of a chair and leaning into the throw pillows behind her.
“Mmm, I dunno,” Junghee shrugged, yawning, “Nothing that involves a lot of moving.”
“Yeah,” Gwiboon agreed, letting herself relax.
They stayed a moment like that, just quietly letting their bodies relax and their minds float. But neither was particularly good with silences and this time Gwiboon was the first to break it.
“Well, we have to do something,” she said, sitting up and running her fingers through her hair.
“Why don’t you think of something,” Junghee whined, letting her body tip over until her head landed on Gwiboon’s lap.
“Tell me some gossip,” the other girl demanded causing Junghee to crack up.
“You think I know gossip that you don’t?” she asked incredulously. Gwiboon chuckled.
“Well, how about you? What’s going on with you?”
“Nothing,” Junghee sighed, curling up and closing her eyes.
    “No boys?” Gwiboon pressed.
    “Nope.”
“You’re boring,” Gwiboon complained. Junghee could hear the pout in her voice.
“So tell me something about you then,” the other girl challenged.
“I don’t think I have anything…” Gwiboon trailed off, “Oh! But heard a rumor about Minjung and BoA-unnie!”
    “You told me that yesterday.”
    “Oh,” Gwiboon sighed in disappointment.
“Are we that boring?” Junghee asked, rolling onto her back so she could look up at the other girl.
“Of course not,” Gwiboon assured her, “Our lives just aren’t centered around boys, thank god.”
“Well neither are Minjung’s and BoA-unnie’s,” Junghee pointed out. Both girls giggled.
Eventually the two decided to watch one of the horror movies that Junghee brought, even though Gwiboon didn’t really like horror movies all that much (she claimed that she wasn’t scared afterwards, but Junghee caught her peering into all of the dark corners of the house when they made their way to the bathroom to brush their teeth).
Junghee flipped off the bedroom light on her way back from making sure that all of the doors were locked before she climbed into one of the two twin beds in the room, feeling her muscles relax into the softness of the mattress.
“G’night Gwiboon,” she mumbled half into her pillow, hearing a very clipped ‘goodnight’ in return. Junghee turned toward the other bed in which Gwiboon was laying. Even in the dark she could see how tense the other girl was and the way her eyes were wide open, constantly scanning the room.
“Gwiboon,” she said, getting her attention and making her jump in surprise, “Get up.”
    “Why?”
“Just get up,” Junghee repeated, climbing out from her own bed and walking over to Gwiboon’s. Positioning herself on one side of it, Junghee pushed the bed across the hardwood floor until it was mere inches away from her own.
“Better?” she asked as she climbed back into her bed, pulling the covers up and relishing in the warmth that spread over her.
“I was fine before,” Gwiboon muttered, climbing into bed nonetheless. Junghee smiled to herself, deciding to just let it go. But she could tell that the other girl was more relaxed as she settled in once more and it wasn’t long until Junghee drifted off into sleep, hearing the soft breathing of Gwiboon next to her.
---
Junghee felt consciousness slowly creeping in, the thick tendrils of sleep slipping away from her as she cracked her eyes open, squinting slightly into the sun filtering through the windows. A glance at the clock told her it was early still- 5:45 only- and the sun was just creeping over the horizon and spilling into the room in warm golden rays.
Having been Gwiboon’s friend for years now, she knew that the other girl wouldn’t be awake until at least eight, maybe later, so she rolled over with the intention of falling back to sleep.
She glanced over at the other bed just to be sure that the other girl was, indeed, still sleeping. And she was. But what started as a quick peek turned into a much longer stare.
The morning light falling over her seemed to make her glow- her brown hair spread around her head on the light pink pillow case like a halo and shone brilliantly in the sun. Her long eyelashes rested on her cheeks and her rosebud pout was just slightly parted as she breathed. She looked like an angel.
Of course Junghee knew better- some of the things that came out of that girls mouth definitely proved that she was in no way affiliated with anything holy, but the feeling that washed over her now as she stared at her best friend was nothing but reverent.
She felt a stirring in her chest and a fluttering in her stomach as she gazed upon Gwiboon and it made her cheeks tinge pink. She’d always known that her best friend was beautiful, though not even beautiful described the sublime loveliness of the other girl, but she tried not to fixate on it too much because she could easily land in inappropriate territory with thoughts like that.
Junghee knew that she liked girls- perhaps even more than she liked boys- but she’d never actually been with a girl before, nor did anyone know this about her. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of it, but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t nervous about how others would react. Honestly, she’d wanted to tell Gwiboon so many times, but she always lost her nerve at the last moment with all of the worst case scenarios playing through her mind on a loop.
In her heart though, she knew that Gwiboon would be okay with it. In fact, she often questioned whether Gwiboon liked girls herself. The other girl always championed beauty and admired anything aesthetically pleasing. Men certainly didn’t seem to come up to Gwiboon’s standards of cleanliness or beauty. Most girls didn’t even live up to Gwiboon’s standards.
But even if Junghee’s hunch was wrong, she knew that Gwiboon would at least be open to having a friend who was interested in women since, during a late night, drunken discussion, Gwiboon had gone on a rant about how society put too much emphasis on gender and that women were expected to behave a certain way when, really, characteristics of men and women overlapped more than people acknowledged.
Junghee actually found the entire rant slightly ironic (even though she completely agreed) since Gwiboon herself was the perfect picture of femininity. Except for the loose-ness of her tongue on occasion.
But all logic and rational theories flew out of Junghee’s mind as she stared at the girl before her, wishing that she could save this moment forever.
She felt the pull of the other girl- wanting nothing more than to reach out and touch her, make sure she was real. And Junghee knew that she shouldn’t- she knew that she should roll over and go back to sleep, but before she even realized it, her hand was hovering over Gwiboon’s serene face, her knuckles dragging lightly over the other girl’s cheekbone.
Unsurprisingly, Gwiboon’s eyes fluttered open at the contact- Junghee watched as her bleary, sleep-filled eyes focused on her.
“What are you doing?” she asked, voice thick with sleep. Junghee hadn’t prepared a reply for that- she was still half asleep herself.
“You’re beautiful,” was what came out of her mouth before she could stop it. Embarrassment flooded through her body, all the way down to her toes, but the light flush that spread over Gwiboon’s cheeks at the statement soothed her mortification.
Their eyes caught then and Junghee felt her breath catch in her throat, her heart beating twice as fast as it had been thirty seconds ago. She could hear her pulse in her ears and all that she could see were Gwiboon’s eyes- the dark brown orbs staring into her own intently and sending a rush over shivers up her spine.
Junghee found herself climbing out from under her covers and crossing over the small gap between their beds to crawl under the covers next to Gwiboon, feeling the heat emanating off the other girl.
They were nose to nose, eyes locked, but it didn’t seem strange like it should have. It was like a gauzy film had settled over the room and their consciousness leaving them in a dream-like state as they gazed at each other in the warm and fresh morning light, their quick breathing the only evidence of the nerves that they felt.
Junghee couldn’t be sure, but she had a feeling that she was the one who leaned forward and eliminated the space between their lips- pressing her lips to Gwiboon’s and shutting her eyes even though the sunlight penetrated through and turned the insides of her eyelids orange. And despite the fact that she didn’t want to, she pulled back and met the other’s girl’s dazed stare.
Holding onto the eye contact, Junghee rested her hand on Gwiboon’s ribs over her over-sized t-shirt, sliding her hand down and over the soft dip of the other’s waist before she trailed her fingers over the curve of Gwiboon’s hips- fingers raking over the silk of her tiny sleep shorts before they met with smooth skin.
“Junghee,” Gwiboon gasped, shuddering under the light ministrations.
“So beautiful,” Junghee murmured, pressing her plush lips against the other’s sharp jaw and pulling more gasps from Gwiboon’s mouth.
“What…” the other girl started, trailing off as Junghee lightly ran her tongue over the soft skin of her neck and grasping at Junghee’s shoulders.
As Junghee continued to run her hands over Gwiboon’s body, drowning in the shivers and gasps of the latter, she felt like everything was clicking into place- like this was what they should have been doing all along. And she knew that she certainly couldn’t speak for the other girl, but it felt like she was right there with her- the give of her body and her responses making Junghee’s heart flutter and her head spin.
They pressed flush as Junghee recaptured the other’s lips, her loose pajama pant clad legs tangling with Gwiboon’s bare ones as they melted together- hands clasping at whatever they could reach to give them something to hold on to.
“God Junghee,” Gwiboon moaned as the other girl brushed her fingers over the taut skin of Gwiboon’s stomach, “What took you so long?”
“You could have done something too,” Junghee pointed out, her lips trailing along the other’s collarbone.
“No, you’re the man in our relationship,” Gwiboon argued, fingers curling into Junghee’s tank top.
“Why am I the man?” Junghee asked, pulling back to look the other in the face.
“Because I’m not the man,” Gwiboon told her. Junghee sighed. She didn’t really have anything to say to that. So instead she just kissed Gwiboon again, feeling the other girl give into her touch.
The sun continued to rise as the two forms melded together, tangling with one another and the sheets until the light hitting them was from high in the sky.
