Summary: Sehun and Jongin are practically siblings, which is why seeing Jongin unsure is so strange. (Flashback from my Fences AU)

------------------

“Did you start your history paper yet?” Sehun asked as he and Jongin entered through the back door of his house after another long day of school, Sehun's uniform shirt sticking to his back slightly with sweat.

“Yeah, I'm about halfway done,” Jongin told him, stepping out of her shoes and waiting for him to do the same.

The two had lived next door to each other since they were born, so Jongin was as comfortable in Sehun's house as she was in her own, and vice versa. They were very nearly siblings with the way they'd grown up together and they basically thought of each other's parents as aunts and uncles.

“Ugh, lucky. I still haven't started,” Sehun groaned, shuffling after Jongin as she made her way toward the stairs.

Lucky?” Jongin snorted, “I don't think it's luck-”

“How was school?” Sehun's mother asked, emerging from the living room to greet them.

“It was alright,” Jongin supplied, “We have a lot of trig homework though.”

Sehun just grunted and grabbed Jongin's wrist to drag her up the stairs. With prom around the corner, he knew where the conversation would inevitably turn and he didn't feel like dealing with it.

“Look at you two,” Sehun's mom predictably commented, smiling at the way Sehun's long fingers were wrapped around Jongin's wrist, “So sweet.”

Sehun rolled his eyes and whined, “Mother.”

Jongin just laughed like it was the funniest thing she'd ever heard. Which it kind of was, to be honest. He and Jongin definitely didn't have anything romantic between them. Jongin was Sehun's best friend- the person he turned to first with a funny story or a troubling problem. But he had absolutely no interest in dating her and he knew that her interest in him was just as nonexistent.

“You two would be so cute together,” she continued, looking at them with stars in her eyes that made Sehun want to dry heave.

“That's gross,” he commented matter off factly.

“Sehun!” his mom scolded, “Don't say that! Jongin is a lovely girl. I'm sure that there are plenty of boys who wish that they could take her to prom. You should beat them to the punch!”

“Jongin isn't gross,” Sehun clarified, “But us dating is.”

His mother tsked, shaking her head apologetically at Jongin who was still laughing like the whole thing was a punchline to a joke that Sehun hadn't heard.

“Okay, well we have trig homework to do,” he announced, dragging Jongin the rest of the way up the stairs and into his room.

“Your mom is hilarious,” Jongin said as she dropped her bag on the floor and plopped down comfortably on his bed.

“She's not kidding,” Sehun deadpanned.

“I know, but it's still funny.”

Sehun shrugged, figuring that he'd think it was funnier if it was Jongin's mom instead of his own mother. Because he couldn't escape his own mother and had to listen to her badger him about dating Jongin constantly.

Sehun dragged his trigonometry textbook out of his backpack and grimaced as he turned to the correct page.

“So do you actually-” Sehun started only to cut himself off when he looked back at Jongin and saw the way she was nervously chewing on her lower lip and staring off into space.

Jongin was shy sometimes- an introvert when she wasn't at dance class or around good friends. But Jongin was never unsure around him. Something was definitely up.

“Jongin?” he tried and Jongin immediately snapped her attention back to him, looking like she'd been caught doing something she wasn't supposed to, “Are you okay?”

“Um,” she began, voice going up like she was asking a question, “Um.”

Sehun found his brows furrowing in concern. What if something really bad had happened? Was her mom sick? Did her dad lose his job? Was she failing a required class so she'd be unable to graduate in the spring?

“I'm gay,” she suddenly blurted out and Sehun found himself staring at her in shock with his mouth hanging open in the way she always told him made him look like he had the intelligence of a monkey.

“Wait...”

Sehun hadn't been sure what to expect, but it hadn't been that.

Not to say that the idea of Jongin being gay was particularly shocking. It actually kind of made sense, if he really thought about it. It explained her obsession with Emma Watson, at least. But it was more the fact that she was admitting it so plainly that was throwing Sehun for a loop.

“I like girls,” Jongin told him, like maybe he didn't know what I'm gay meant.

“I got that,” he told her with an eye roll that had her snorting.

“So...” Jongin started again, lips down-turned in worry, “Is that...is that cool? With you?”

“Yeah! Of course!” he hurried to assure her, hating that she felt that she had reason to be anxious. They were practically family. Even if she'd killed someone, he probably would still love her like a sister.

Not that he'd ever say anything so sappy to her face. That would have been weird and she'd probably laugh at him.

Jongin still looked a little unsure.

“I'm just surprised that...you're telling me, I guess,” he tried to explain, not too sure himself what he was trying to say.

“Why wouldn't I tell you?” Jongin asked with a disbelieving laugh, “I was planning to tell you first but...”

“You told someone else already?” Sehun asked, eyes uncharacteristically wide.

“My mom,” Jongin confirmed and Sehun felt his eyes opening even wider, if that was possible, “I didn't plan to do it. At least not yet. But...it just kind of came out last night.”

“What'd she say?” Sehun asked, anxiously anticipating the answer like it was his relationship with Jongin's mother on the line instead of hers.

“She was kind of surprised,” Jongin told him, “She said that she'd never suspected it. But she was pretty okay with it.”

Sehun felt the tension in his chest loosen.

“It was actually pretty anticlimactic, to be honest,” Jongin added with a laugh, “She was pretty much like, well, okay.”

“Wow,” Sehun marveled, still somewhat in shock.

Jongin quirked a smile at Sehun who was probably looking at her in absolute amazement.

“Well, thanks for being okay with it and stuff,” Jongin chuckled awkwardly.

“You don't have to thank me,” he said with a roll of his eyes and Jongin beamed.

Sehun let out a long-suffering sigh and held his arms open for a hug which Jongin readily accepted.

“Okay,” Sehun said, pulling back from the embrace, “We should start on our homework before my mom walks in and thinks that I've proposed.”

“My dream come true,” Jongin stated dryly with a smirk and Sehun shoved her.

“Yeah, well, having me propose is most people's dreams.”

“Mmhmm,” Jongin hummed, opening her trig notebook to a blank page and pulling a pencil out of her bag.

“Shut up,” Sehun complained, but he felt a smile tugging at his lips.

Despite Jongin's confession, nothing would change between them. Which made Sehun smile because he thought that the two of them were perfect the way they were.
