Summary: Chanyeol is too earnest for his own good. Kris is just afraid of catching her roommate in the act. (Part of my Fences AU)
Chanyeol eyed his apartment door from where he was talking with Jongdae about the economics final they'd both taken earlier that day. He knew he was being a pretty shitty host, what with the way he was only half focused as Jongdae lamented about the final question on the exam and how the professor had glossed over that section of the textbook, but he couldn't stop himself from constantly glancing over at the door as if that would make a certain someone arrive sooner.
At least he was kind of socializing and not just blatantly staring at the door like Baekhyun was, her fingers clenching her empty glass tightly as she looked at the door so intently it appeared as though she was trying to make it catch fire with her mind.
But really, he wasn't much better.
“So, is Kris here yet?” Jongdae asked, causing Chanyeol to snap his eyes back to the now-smirking girl in front of him.
“Huh?” he replied intelligently.
Jongdae snorted, “You're not very subtle.”
“I have no idea what you're talking about,” Chanyeol sniffed, finding his eyes darting back to the door momentarily before focusing back on a very amused looking Jongdae. And an amused Jongdae usually meant that someone else's pride was taking a fall. In this case, it was his.
“It's too bad Baek's a lesbian because you guys really would have been perfect for each other,” Jongdae mused, “You both seem to be under the impression that watching the door and waiting for the girl you want to bang is socially acceptable.”
“Fuck off,” Chanyeol rolled his eyes, though there wasn't much heat to his words. He was used to Jongdae's ribbing by now. Though he was somewhat curious as to how she knew he liked Kris. And how she knew about Baekhyun's crush on Lu Han. He'd only just figured that one out, for god's sake.
“I don't know who I pity more, Lu Han or Kris,” she went on, clearly entertaining herself with her commentary, “On the one hand, Baekhyun is more aggressive than you, but at least Lu Han doesn't scare easily. Kris on the other hand...and you're a very overwhelming person to be around.”
“I think you need to re-direct your pity to whomever ends up with your snarky ass,” Chanyeol scoffed and Jongdae just laughed.
“Don't even pretend that my snarky ass isn't in high demand,” Jongdae easily replied, but Chanyeol wasn't really listening right then because Yixing had opened the door and Kris was stepping into the apartment behind Lu Han.
He was making his way over to the newly arrived guests before he even had time to think, hearing Jongdae calling bros before hoes, you asshole, behind him. But he knew she was mostly teasing. He'd buy her a coffee when they got back from break, he reasoned.
“Kris noona! You made it!” he exclaimed as soon as he was within hearing distance, beaming as Kris smiled somewhat shyly back at him.
Beyond thanking her for coming and asking how her finals had been, Chanyeol really didn't know what to say, so he excused himself when Kris started talking to Yixing- the two speaking easily together in a way that Chanyeol envied- to go give Baekhyun shit for practically drooling over Lu Han. But he wasn't ready to just give in and let a simple greeting be the only interaction he had with Kris that night. He was determined to go talk to her- strike up an actual conversation. He just- fuck. He needed a drink.
Armed with some of the punch Yixing had mixed prior to the guests arriving, Chanyeol looked around his apartment. It looked like Baekhyun still hadn't gotten the nerve to go talk to Lu Han. Though she had gotten herself a drink. Yixing had his arm around Minseok's waist, leaning into her as they chatted with one of the international students and his roommate. Jongdae was laughing at her friend Joonmyun's dancing, and Baekhyun's roommate was grinding up on her new girlfriend under the guise of dancing.
Most importantly, Kris was leaning against the wall, watching as her roommate, Lu Han, swayed easily to the music.
This should be easy. She wasn't talking to anyone and actually looked like she wished that someone would talk to her. But...
After taking a couple steps toward her, Chanyeol sidestepped into his bedroom and closed the door behind him.
What the fuck? Why was he being like this? He'd never been the type to shy away from social interaction. In the past, he always just dove in when there was someone he had feelings for that he wanted to get to know better. But there was just something about Kris that unnerved him. Maybe it was the language barrier, no matter how slight. Maybe it was Kris' height or her somewhat intimidating looks. Regardless, he hated that he was acting like such a loser.
A knock on the door broke Chanyeol out of his self-deprecating inner monologue.
“Yeah?” he called out, trying to think of an excuse for suddenly ducking into his room when he was hosting a party at his apartment.
Fortunately, it was just Yixing.
“How's the whole wooing Kris thing going?” he asked with a quirk of his lips.
Chanyeol was torn between whining to his roommate about his pathetic behavior and telling him to fuck off. A groan was what ended up coming out of his mouth.
“That well?” Yixing joked and Chanyeol didn't laugh, “Aw, c'mon. Just talk to her. I promise she's not actually scary. Just kind of shy. I'm sure she'd appreciate the company considering her roommate has abandoned her in favor of pressing herself against Baekhyun...”
Chanyeol felt a stab of jealousy that Baekhyun was making much more progress than he was when they had essentially started the night in the same place. Baekhyun was dancing with the girl she liked while Chanyeol was hiding in his room.
“Just go talk to her,” Yixing told him.
“But what am I supposed to say?” Chanyeol demanded, gesturing widely and immediately feeling like an idiot for even asking.
“Whatever strikes your fancy,” Yixing said, smiling calmly just like someone who'd had a serious girlfriend for a year and a half would. Like everything was so easy.
Chanyeol frowned, “Yeah...okay.” He nodded. He could do this. Yep. Totally.
“Good,” Yixing grinned, looking the definition of serene. Though, to be fair, he already was pretty damn chill and when he drank, he basically achieved nirvana.
“I'm going,” Chanyeol announced, not moving from his place in front of his bed.
“Great,” Yixing smiled encouragingly.
With a couple more encouraging words from Yixing (including something about sheep that Chanyeol didn't quite understand), Chanyeol rejoined the party and immediately located Kris in the same place she'd been earlier- leaning against the wall and looking displeased at her phone.
“How's it going?” Chanyeol asked brightly, slumping against the wall next to her.
Kris looked over like she was perplexed as to why he was talking to her before she frowned at her phone again.
“Lu Han just left with Baekhyun and she's not answering my texts so I'm afraid to go back to my apartment,” Kris told him, drumming her fingers nervously against the edge of her phone case.
Chanyeol could feel his eyebrows furrowing as he processed that. One the one hand, Kris was asking him for advice on problem she was having (kind of...), but on the other, Baekhyun was probably off fucking Lu Han while he was standing there like an awkward piece of human. And then there was the fact that he could maybe possibly help with this problem, but he wasn't sure if his help could be misconstrued as creepy...
“Do you guys have separate rooms?” he asked instead of saying any of the things running through his mind.
“Yeah,” Kris said, “But...who knows with Lu Han? They could end up on the couch or in the kitchen or in the bathroom...”
From what Chanyeol knew about Lu Han, Kris' worries seemed to be reasonable. Though they were giving him a bunch of mental images that he wasn't sure he wanted.
“Yeah,” Kris sighed, staring forlornly at her dark phone screen and maybe Yixing was right. Maybe she really wasn't so scary.
“Well, I mean...you could stay over here? If you wanted?” Chanyeol offered, looking at Kris with what he assumed was a painfully hopeful expression on his face.
Kris looked at him in surprise, her eyes getting big and making her look almost comical.
“Where?” she asked, looking around like she was expecting to see a guest room magically appear.
“You can stay in my room,” Chanyeol told her, “Alone!” he quickly clarified when her eyes grew even rounder at that, “You can have my bed and I'll take the couch.”
Kris frowned in thought and Chanyeol felt like he was going to die.
“I don't want to force you out of your own room-”
“It's fine!” he almost yelled, glad that the music was loud enough that his outburst wasn't as jarring as it could have been, “I wouldn't make you sleep on the couch. Who knows what Yixing and Minseok have gotten up to on there!” he laughed nervously, knowing he probably looked a little manic.
Kris gaped at him for a second before she chuckled, still seeming somewhat confused by the situation, but amused at least.
“And you don't mind sleeping there?”
“Well, I have to sit there to watch TV and stuff anyway, so the damage is done...” Chanyeol laughed again and hoped that he looked mildly...not insane.
Kris giggled at that, eyes flickering down so her lashes fanned across her cheekbones and Chanyeol got the feeling he was in over his head.
“Do you have an extra toothbrush?” Kris asked, looking a little unsure of herself and Chanyeol felt his heart soar. She was staying over. In his apartment. In his bed. Because he asked her to. Granted, he'd be on the couch and Kris was only staying to avoid seeing her roommate fucking Baekhyun on any given surface of their shared apartment. But still. It was something.
“Yep!” Chanyeol told her too enthusiastically to be answering a question regarding dental care, “You can borrow a shirt and some shorts to sleep in too,” he offered, taking in her button up shirt and crisp shorts. Not exactly an ensemble that screamed comfort.
“Thanks,” she said shyly, long fingers fiddling with her phone and Chanyeol beamed.
His reply of anytime could not have been more sincere.
Chanyeol spent the rest of the party alternating between mingling (while dodging Jongdae's ribbing) and checking up on Kris since her roommate had abandoned her. Of course she had Yixing to talk to as well and even Tao spent a few minutes chatting with her even though he appeared terrified of her on the best of days.
But Chanyeol liked that he could go over to keep her company and see a genuine smile bloom on her face.
When the last of the guests (aka Minseok) finally left, Chanyeol immediately sprung into action- retrieving the spare toothbrush from the bathroom medicine cabinet and an oversized shirt of his that was worn soft from wear, along with a pair of basketball shorts.
“You can use the toothpaste in the bathroom and change in the bathroom or in the bedroom or whatever,” he told her, grinning broadly like he was showing her to a luxury suite instead of just leading the way to his and Yixing's shared bathroom.
“Do you have...face wash?” Kris asked, looking truly concerned.
“Yeah!” Chanyeol said, clapping his hands together once in excitement, “C'mon, I'll show you.”
In the bathroom, Chanyeol showed her his face wash, Yixing's face wash, and the face wash Minseok kept there for when she stayed over, telling Kris that she could have her pick. Surely Yixing and Minseok wouldn't mind sharing.
When Kris emerged from the bathroom ten minutes later in Chanyeol's clothes with no makeup on, Chanyeol froze where he was making up the couch for himself. She looked so perfect. He wanted to pull her down on the couch and just snuggle up next to her. And with his clothes hanging off her frame (she was tall, but the clothes were even big on Chanyeol), it was far too easy to imagine that she was his girlfriend.
“Umm...” Kris shuffled in place, her own clothes neatly folded over her arm.
“I'll show you my room!” Chanyeol announced and wanted to kick himself for thinking of other reasons why he might be showing her to his room.
“If you're sure...”
“Yep! And I just washed my sheets yesterday,” he proudly informed her as he led her into his bedroom, “So I've only slept on them once. If that's okay.”
Chanyeol almost wanted to mention that he'd jerked off in the shower the night before as well, so the sheets were wank free, but knew that he should keep that fact to himself. Because while it might have been reassuring on some level, it was also way too much information.
“It's fine,” Kris told him and she seemed much less intimidating without her makeup.
Now it was obvious that it was shyness that kept her quiet, not arrogance, and all Chanyeol wanted to do was pull her to his chest and hold her.
“Thanks again for letting me stay,” she said, draping her clothes over the back of Chanyeol's desk chair.
“It's no problem!” he assured her, waving his arms around in a way that was supposed to illustrate...something.
Kris nodded and perched on the edge of the bed, looking uncomfortable, so Chanyeol figured that that was his cue to exit.
“Alright, well, let me know if you need anything. I'll just be out there,” he said, gesturing with his thumb to the door that led to the living room.
Kris murmured a small thanks and smiled so that her gums showed.
Chanyeol smiled back in a way that might have been manic as he turned and gave a little spastic wave before closing the door behind him.
Later, when he was lying in the dark on the couch, all he could think about was Kris sleeping in his bed, her blonde hair splayed around her head messily with her cheek resting against his navy pillow case. Did she sleep on her side? On her back? On her stomach? With her legs stretched out or curled into her chest?
Creepy, you are being a creep, Chanyeol said to himself, stop thinking about Kris sleeping.
Easier said than done.
In an attempt to distract himself, he grabbed his phone and checked twitter. Nothing was happening. It was probably too late to send anyone a Kakao message. Nonetheless, he scrolled to his conversation with Baekhyun and typed out I'm sleeping on the couch because of you. It was true, anyway.
He didn't expect a response any time soon, so he set his phone aside and tried once again to sleep.
He should go out and get breakfast and coffee from the cafe next to his apartment building in the morning. That way, Kris would wake up to delicious pastries and steaming coffee. Who wouldn't enjoy that? Maybe she'd imagine what it would be like to date Chanyeol, waking up in his bed to him coming into the room with breakfast for them to enjoy in their pajamas.
The image had him smiling to himself, even as he drifted off to sleep.
Chanyeol cracked his eyes open, distantly registering the soft murmur of voices and the smell of something cooking. Which wasn't unusual since he often awoke to Yixing and Minseok chatting in the kitchen while they prepared breakfast.
But wait. He wasn't in his bed...
Kris! Kris had stayed over!
Sitting upright, Chanyeol flailed for his phone and checked the time. 10:17. Fuck. He'd though he'd wake up before this. Now he couldn't go get breakfast and show Kris what an amazing boyfriend he make because, from the sound of it, she was already awake.
Sleepily stumbling across the living room, Chanyeol made his way into the kitchen to find Yixing at the stove making eggs with Kris perched on a barstool, hair pulled back in a messy ponytail and slight marks on her cheek from blankets pressing into her skin while she slept. Chanyeol had never wanted to kiss anyone more in his life.
“Uh...” he mumbled intelligently, drawing the attention of the two occupants of the kitchen.
“Morning,” Yixing chirped happily, carefully putting a pile of scrambled eggs on a plate and handing them to Kris.
“Good morning,” Kris said, offering a small smile as she took the plate.
“Good morning,” Chanyeol replied, still somewhat dazed from sleep and kicking himself for the missed opportunity of demonstrating his boyfriend potential. Instead, Yixing got to be the perfect gentleman who made their guest breakfast. Not that Yixing wanted to date Kris. Or that Kris would even think of dating Yixing since he was with Minseok. But still.
“Want some eggs?” Yixing asked, seemingly unaware of the fact that he was kind of stealing Chanyeol's thunder.
Chanyeol took his eggs when Yixing handed him a plate with a smile and sat down next to Kris, shooting her a sheepish grin before digging in. Because he was hungry even if he was disappointed in himself for sleeping too long.
After they'd finished breakfast, Kris had excused herself to get re-dressed in her clothes from the night before. Once she'd brushed her teeth and fixed her hair, she left to go home despite Chanyeol's offer for her to hang out and watch a movie.
“I want to go shower and change clothes,” she'd told him apologetically and Chanyeol had enough sense not to offer her his clothes since he was pretty sure she wanted to change into her own clothes.
“Why'd you have to be all gentlemanly and serve her breakfast?” Chanyeol complained when he returned to the kitchen after seeing Kris out.
“Huh?” Yixing looked up from his phone.
“I wanted to go get breakfast for Kris this morning,” he whined, knowing that pouting wasn't a good look on him.
“You were asleep,” Yixing pointed out with some amusement, “I wasn't going to refuse to feed her just because you were still dead to the world.”
Chanyeol huffed knowing that Yixing had a point.
When he checked his phone, he saw that he'd gotten a message from Baekhyun an hour prior in response to his Kakao message the night before.
Naturally, she hadn't had any idea what he was talking about in regards to sleeping on the couch.
i'll explain l8r, he sent her before venturing into his own bedroom like he wasn't supposed to be there.
Kris had made the bed and left his t-shirt and shorts folded neatly on top of the blanket.
Something about that was really endearing and Chanyeol found himself smiling as he took in the scene.
He'd picked up his pillow and brought it to his nose to sniff before he even realized what he was doing. It smelled like hair product and whatever perfume Kris wore. It was shame for even smelling it to begin with that had him setting the pillow down instead of inhaling again.
It would appear that he was a little more smitten than he'd initially realized.
With a sigh, Chanyeol flopped down on his mattress, effectively messing up Kris' efforts. Oh well. He didn't actually remember the last time he'd made his bed.
As he lay there, Chanyeol could still smell the faint scent of Kris' perfume and it had him breathing in deeply just to savor it. When he realized what he was doing, he let out a groan and dragged a hand over his face.
Yep. He was a goner.
